Background
BHP conducts nickel operations across Australia, integrating mine-to-market operations with over 3500 employees and contractors.
The BHP Kwinana Nickel Refinery (KNR) processes the sulphide concentrates from the smelters to produce premium-grade nickel powder and briquettes containing 99.8 per cent nickel. Nickel matte and metal are exported to overseas markets via the Port of Fremantle.
Over 75% of BHP’s nickel is now sold to global battery material suppliers.
The Project
Inspections are an integral part of shutdowns, providing insight on the status, and estimation of the remaining lifetime of assets, with the goal of optimising production and future maintenance activities.
APTS was awarded a contract by BHP Kwinana Nickel Refinery for Testing, Inspection, and Industrial Services during its September 2019 shutdown.

Results
After working with the client on scheduling, our APTS team was able to safely and successfully complete the scope of works within the client’s time frame. Our client was impressed with the team’s flexibility during the compressed schedule, seamlessly dealing with any challenges presented, during more than 11K hours of incident-free works.
